Pores

Pores you cannot shrink, but can absolutely improve.

Nothing closes a pore, and any product promising otherwise is selling you a temporary tightening effect. What genuinely changes is how visible pores are: how much they hold, how the skin around them sits, and how light falls across the surface. Dermora scores that by zone and builds the routine that moves it.

What we look for

What we score around your pores

Visibility by zone

How prominently pores read across the nose, cheeks, and forehead, scored separately.

Congestion

Blackheads and trapped debris, the single biggest driver of pores looking larger than they are.

Oil flow

Sebum output by zone, which stretches pore openings and refills them through the day.

Surrounding texture

Roughness around the opening that casts shadow and exaggerates every pore near it.

Skin laxity

Loss of firmness that lets round pores elongate into the teardrop shape that reads as larger.

Product buildup

Residue patterns from heavy or poorly removed products that sit in and around openings.

The honest version

Pore size is genetic; pore appearance is not.

The width of your pores is largely set by genetics and oil gland size, and no topical product changes that. This is worth knowing because it saves you money. Toners that promise to shrink pores are delivering brief tightening from evaporation, which looks like a result for twenty minutes and then is not.

What does change, sometimes dramatically, is appearance. A pore packed with oxidised debris reads as a dark dot and looks much bigger than the same pore emptied. Rough surrounding texture casts shadow that makes openings look deeper. Slack skin lets round pores stretch. All three are addressable, which is why two people with identical pore anatomy can look completely different.

What moves the score

Clear them, smooth around them, and hold the line on oil.

Three levers do most of the work. A consistent chemical exfoliant that gets inside the pore keeps congestion from building. A retinoid improves the surrounding texture and supports firmness over months. Managing oil through the day reduces how quickly openings refill. Add sunscreen, because photodamage costs firmness and that is what lets pores elongate with age.

What does not help: squeezing, which damages the surrounding skin and often enlarges the opening permanently, and pore strips, which take the top off and leave the rest. Your first analysis is free and scores pore visibility by zone alongside six other categories, so you can see whether your problem is genuinely congestion, oil, or the texture around the openings, and treat the right one.

FAQ

Common questions about pores.

Can you actually shrink your pores?

No. Pore size is set largely by genetics and oil gland size, and no topical product permanently changes it. What you can change is how visible they are, by clearing congestion, smoothing the texture around them, managing oil, and protecting firmness. That is often a bigger visual difference than shrinking would be.

Why do my pores look bigger than they used to?

Usually one of three things: congestion has built up and is holding the openings open, oil output has increased, or firmness has declined with age and sun exposure so round pores have elongated. Scoring them by zone alongside your oil and texture results separates which one is driving it for you.

Are blackheads the same as large pores?

No, though they get confused constantly. A blackhead is a pore filled with oil and dead skin that has oxidised and darkened at the surface. The pore itself may be a perfectly ordinary size. Clearing congestion is often the fastest visible improvement available, because you are removing contents rather than fighting anatomy.

Do pore strips work?

They remove the visible top of surface plugs and give a satisfying result that lasts a few days until the pore refills. They do not address why congestion forms, and used aggressively they irritate the surrounding skin. A regular chemical exfoliant does far more over a month than strips do in the same period.
